Blogger Wael Abbas says assaulted at home

By Safaa Abdoun
First Published: April 9, 2009

CAIRO: A police officer broke into blogger Wael Abbas’ home and physically assaulted him after a dispute between him and his neighbor, said Abbas.

“My mother and I have been assaulted by a neighbor and his police officer brother. My tooth was broken and I’m suffering a head injury … Police corruption has arrived to my house,” Abbas wrote on his Facebook page, immediately after the incident.

News of Abbas’ assault was instantly leaked to the blogosphere.

“Although it started as a personal disagreement, it is not a coincidence that his neighbor brought in his brother who is a police officer. He understood well what power the police has in today’s Egypt,” blogger Hossam El-Hamalawy told Daily News Egypt.

Abbas contacted El-Hamalawy and told him about the incident, which he posted on his blog arabawy.org.

“There are similar cases that happened before … it is an abuse of police power and it has to be investigated,” said El-Hamalawy.

“This is a major violation of human rights, a police officer has broken into an Egyptian citizen’s home, breaking the door, going inside and assaulting him,” he added.

El-Hamalawy said that he, along with Sherif Azer from the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights, are currently getting lawyers in order to file a case for Abbas.
